TRUSTEE WEEK 12th – 16th November 2018

SUFFOLK HAS ITS SEAT AT THE TABLE OF

NATIONAL ‘TRUSTEE DEBATE’

SUFFOLK’S views and experiences around charity trusteeship and young people, was given a national stage last week in London, to tie in with ‘Trustee Week’ 12th – 16th November.

Janet Perry, who heads the Young Leadership Project, for Community Action Suffolk, was invited to be part of a presentation panel on Trustee diversity at the NCVO Trustee Conference.

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations is keen to explore how young people are being encouraged to become more involved in voluntary organisations, and has a mission to increase diversity on trustee boards.

Suffolk’s Young Trustee Programme now has 10 young people placed as ‘Young Shadow Trustees’ within a range of charities throughout the county.

Janet said: “I was so pleased to have been invited to this event, to discuss what Suffolk is doing, and to explain how effective our scheme is here in the county. Diversity of trustee boards is such a hot topic at the moment, and there is a real desire – across the UK – to see younger people represented at the table, as well as other under represented groups. It’s important that we reflect the thoughts of younger people at the heart of their own communities.”

The project addresses diversity, youth representation in decision making, as well as transition planning and future proofing for boards. Community Action Suffolk is keen to hear from any voluntary organisation keen to more about engaging young people as part of their future board activity.

“We must do all we can to change the perception that a board position for a charity is for someone who is elder, and perhaps retired. Suffolk is doing great work in this field and we want more people to be part of our proactive initiative to partner younger people with great causes in the region.”

Community Action Suffolk also provides support for voluntary sector organisations on a range of trustee roles and responsibilities. We have a designated officer and expert, Jon Eaton.
