A volunteer’s event was held on 27th November 2013 at the UCS in Ipswich. The evening was a Celebration of ‘2012 inspired’ Volunteering attended by over 60 volunteers who were either involved at London 2012 as Games Maker volunteers or, who have been inspired by the events of last summer to get involved as a volunteer locally with the County Events Team as part of the CAS Sport & Event Volunteering Project.
The guest speakers were Louise Jukes, who was a member of the GB Handball team in London, and Russell Moon who was a volunteer in the Olympic Opening Ceremony (and who has written a book about the experience), both are local to Suffolk and both told inspiring stories about what London 2012 meant to them.
It was a great evening and a clear sign that the volunteering spirit of 2012 is alive and kicking here in Suffolk!
A big ‘Thank you’ to the staff of Community Action Suffolk for their support in making the event such a success and to Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Sport for their continuing commitment to the Sport & Event Volunteering Project (funded until 2016).
One of the points that came up on the night was the number of Suffolk-based volunteers who are getting involved with next years Commonwealth Games. If you have applied to be a volunteer in Glasgow 2014, or you know someone local who has, please log onto the website at www.suffolkvolunteeringlegacy.org.uk or call the Project Officer on 01473 261118. It would be great to hear from you!
